The author is an Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles. His field of research involved x-ray crystal structure analyses of protein and DNA molecules, and molecular evolution. His most recent book is Present at the Flood: How Structural Molecular Biology Came About.
In addition to Sudoku puzzles, his interests include pre-Mozart opera, and collection and restoration of antique typewriters (the latter themselves being a form of three-dimensional puzzle).
